Arizona Senator (亞利桑那州參議員), Jeff Flake, has always had a dream of spending a survivalist week alone. That dream prompted him to sneak away to a deserted island in the North Pacific Ocean four years ago. And recently, the same dream inspired him to take a vacation from Capitol Hill (國會山) and go on a four-day Robinson Crusoe style holiday. This time, he embarked on the adventure to an uninhabited tropical island with his two teenage sons.

Flake and his youngest sons, 15-year-old Taller and 13-year-old Dallin, traveled 5,200 miles from Phoenix, Arizona to the island of Biggarenn in the North Pacific Ocean, carrying no food or water.

Part of the Marshall Islands, the beach front destination offered no amenities (便利設施), forcing the Flakes to catch and cook their own food and purify their water.

The father and sons ate a diet of coconuts, crab and fish, which they captured themselves and cooked over an open fire started with a magnifying glass. They brought along two desalinators (海水淡化器) and had to pump for hours each night to turn the ocean water into drinkable water.

One of the most memorable moments of the trip, Flake recalled, was when he and his 15-year-old were pursued by sharks after spearing a fish in the ocean.

They lived outdoors during their time on the island, sleeping in hammocks (吊床) under the stars. “It’s not just a regular Boy Scout camp; it’s more survival,” Flake said. “For a dad it was a wonderful thing. No video games around, no television, no distractions (令人分心的事物), no texting.”
